Why the Online 5 Hour Class is Necessary?

  • If you want to obtain a New York driver's license, you must complete the 5-hour prelicense course. The rules regarding participation in this course are very strict, even if you have a driver's license from a foreign country or another state.

5-Hour Class Online Via Zoom — DMV Approved!

Online learning has become increasingly popular during the pandemic. This allows students to attend courses from home with added convenience and safety benefits - taking education out of the four walls of a classroom into your own living room!

Why the Zoom 5 Hour Course?

After the New York Governor made it possible in late July 2020, drivers can now complete their 5-hour course online. This convenient and informative class serves to teach new NY drivers valuable principles of safe driving as well as proper traffic rules - all leading towards a decline in violations on roads across the state!

Where is the 5 Hour Class Offered?

The pandemic has made traditional in-person driver's ed classes difficult to conduct safely. Fortunately, with the introduction of Zoom and other virtual meeting software, we're now able to offer our 5 hour Pre-licensing Course online - allowing drivers aged 18+ statewide easy access to this necessary step towards obtaining their license! Classes are simple enough for anyone comfortable using video chat services like Zoom; all you need is a link or ID code sent by your instructor ahead of time, so learning can be done from the comfort and safety of home.

Before the 5 hour class Zoom, each student will have pre-registered and availed his/her Learner’s Permit to enable the school to identify him/her.

This helps the school to determine if you are really eligible for the course. The school will also record your information as presented on your Learner’s Permit.

  • When enrolling for the course, each student should thoroughly understand the course participation technology requirements from start to finish. This will enable the students to decide if they are willing to take the course online or not.
  • You need to complete the Zoom 5-hour course before receiving the completion certificate (MV-278 certificate). In other words, each student MUST stay for the entire Zoom meeting session to qualify for the certificate.
  • Having a strong, dependable connection is essential to ensure your meeting runs as planned.

After mailing you the certificate, we begin your exciting journey to becoming a licensed driver. Submit it promptly to New York State DMV so they can update your record and set up an appointment for road testing - one step closer to reaching that milestone!

5 Hour Pre-Licensing Course: Preparation, Completion and What Comes After

So How is a Zoom Meeting Set Up?

To set up a Zoom meeting, you should follow this procedure:

  • To get started, simply download the Zoom app from your device's App Store - it couldn't be easier!
  • Follow the steps to provide your personal information and complete the registration process.
  • To ensure accuracy and clarity, please sign up for Zoom with your given name. That's right - the same one on your Learner's Permit photo ID!
  • On the day of your Zoom meeting, school leadership will equip you with all necessary details to access it. Simply follow the link and join in for an engaging virtual discussion!
  • To ensure a successful learning experience, create an environment that is free from distractions. This means ensuring you're in a space where there's minimal noise and no unanticipated movements behind you - as anything out of the ordinary can be disruptive to other learners at meeting with you.
  • In order to prevent any disruptive technological issues during your work session, be sure you're sitting near a power source and keep the charger within reach.
  • In order for your learning experience to be seamless, a dependable and powerful Internet connection is essential - staying connected throughout the class session is key.
  • To ensure a successful meeting, log in 10 minutes prior and be prepared for the host's admission. Allow yourself enough time to settle and prepare!
  • As you join the meeting, make sure to disable your camera and microphone until you are settled in. Once ready, feel free to switch on the camera; it should stay open throughout this session. However, only activate your mic while speaking - otherwise having a miked silence might be distracting for others!

Successfull Class Completion

Once you've mastered the pre-licensing course, you'll be armed with an MV-278 pre-licensing certificate. After successfully completing a driver education course through either your high school or college, you will be rewarded with an MV-285 (Student Certificate of Completion).

Once you're ready to take your road test, don't forget to bring along the original certificate! Having one of these on-hand is a requirement before scheduling. Make sure it's accessible for when your license examiner needs it.

Keep in mind that once you receive your certificate it’s only valid for a year from the date it’s issued to you. If for some reason you let your certificate expire you have to complete the 5-hour pre-licensing class again. On the day you make the appointment the certificate has to be valid but on the day you take the road test it can be expired.

If you’re changing your license from one license class to a new one you don’t need to have a certificate if you already have a New York State driver’s license. In this case, all you need to do is apply to amend to a different license class.

How Do I Collect My Pre-Licensing Course Certificate?

Driving Schools issue the pre-licensing course certificate in three ways:

  • You can collect it from driving school offices
  • You can get a certificate the next day by courier delivery

Customer Reviews

Macon Thompson

Driving is my biggest passion. But my kids didn't want to learn it from me! They found courses, based on their own opinions and demands. Every time they came back home I asked them about what they had learned. They both got very enthusiastic about their lessons and eagerly memorized everything. I appreciate the professionalism of their instructors and the affordable prices for providing the education in Brooklyn. Thank you so much!

Jane Faber

I tried to get a driving license three times in the past. Every time, I would fail to complete my studies because I was not motivated enough. Probably, I was too young and lazy. On the fourth attempt, I finally succeeded! The instructors in Brooklyn did a fantastic job. I was looking forward to seeing them again every time. They not only explained things to me but also inspired me. Sincerely recommended!

Tristan Gilson

I grew up in India where people drive on the other side of the road. I wanted to get an instructor in Brooklyn who had experience working with foreign students. Thank you so much for helping me! I felt psychologically comfortable during every lesson. My instructor had a perfect sense of humor and encouraged me to push the gas pedal a bit more firmly. I'm about to buy my first car now!

Samand Adamson

I'm particularly grateful for the fact that now, I'm not afraid of driving in the streets. Previously, I used to have some kind of a phobia. I'm a good driver and I've never had accidents. But I felt too stressed in any urban area. It was much more comfortable for me to drive in the countryside. Thanks to Josh, I overcame my fears. I can cope even with traffic jams in Brooklyn.

Kathleen Arnold

I can't stop praising the professionalism of managers. They were incredibly attentive to every detail. They always remembered my name and our history of interactions. I had to reschedule things a few times because of my hectic work. I relocated from abroad in Brooklyn and I had so many questions. The quality of service was simply brilliant! The managers always stayed calm, friendly and welcoming. They made me feel much more confident.

Dominique Gonzalez

The process of studying was very interesting! Some of my friends who got their licenses earlier than me complained about getting bored while memorizing the theory. I prepared myself for a similar experience — but actually, I had fun! The information was very well-structured. I understood everything on the go and had to ask questions only a couple of times. Thank you so much for the amazing classes and wonderful teachers!
